Christie’s Sale of The Baron von Staff-Reitzenstein Collection

Not much is out there about Baron Hans von Staff-Reitzenstein, but he definitely loved his wine. He had 13,000 bottles in his Bavarian cellar. Some of his collection was offered for sale last year, and we have more coming for sale in this collection. This is a single owner sale, so what you see here is highly indicative of his taste.

No need to go on about the man, let’s get into his wines and see what we’ve got for sale. This is an online sale, so bids may change between the time I post this and when you see it.

Lots:

Lot 5 – Antinori Tignanello 1989 – 6 bottles

You could get this for $400 for the entire lot. This is a competitive price for this. This is one of the more well known Super Tuscans. This is a bit of an off year for this wine, hence the slightly lower price than the other lots. Off year means it was just rated slightly lower. It does not mean you will necessarily like it any less.

Lot 22 – Gaja Barbaresco 1986 – 4 bottles

I had the 2008 the other day. This is just so delicious and a bid of $900 would take this. Definitely not cheap, but Gaja is never cheap. Definitely a good buy in my book.

Lot 28 – Gaja Sperss 1990 – 4 bottles

A bit cheaper than the previously lot, but just as delicious. This bottle also may be going for a bit of a drop given that it has seen some dust.

Lot 36 – Pierre Gelin, Gevrey-Chambertin 1993 – 12 bottles

I’m not familiar with this maker, but I do know GC quite well. This is villages wine, which typically trades at a slight discount when it’s in the middle years. This is will definitely be delicious and will likely improve with age. You can pick up these for just $40 per bottle.

Lot 43 – Louis Jadot, Volnay 1990 -12 bottles

Full case of Jadot Volnay. What more is there to say. This price is phenomenal.

Lot 119 – Pape Clement 1956 – 2 bottles

A cheap price for a fun gamble. Do this and enjoy. If this is good, it’s a bargain. If it is dead, it is a relatively cheap gamble. The levels are definitely low, but you get compensated for that in the price.

Lot 470 – Domaine de Pegau, Châteauneauf-de-Pape Cúvee Réservee 2000 – 6 bottles

Great CDP for $50 a bottle from a legendary producer. Another no-brainer here if you like this delicious juice. The bottles are in fantastic condition. I always feel like I should be drinking more Pegau.

Lot 494 – Vega Sicilia, Valbuena 5 1991 – 12 bottles

A full case of Valbuena. This is also a great price for this rare Italian wine. Hopefully we continue to see this get cheaper as the economy changes. The following lot is the same wine.

Good luck! This auction is winding to a close very soon.

Acker Merrall & Condit’s Auction of Fine and Rare Wines – Saturday October 17th

Back again with another post. So soon? Well, I feel the pressure is on to get these out. If I haven’t covered an auction you would like to see covered, just shoot me an email or leave me a comment. This auction again takes place at Marea in NYC. Great restaurant from an auction house with a tricky history. They’ve done some great work over the years, but it has come at a cost to their reputation. I am always hoping that this bite to their reputation hurts them in the room and provides us with some deals as we do have to cope with their cowboy nature and desire to consign whatever they can, regardless of provenance.

Christie’s Fine Wine and Spirits – Saturday October 24th, 2015

It’s been a few weeks, but I’m back. I’ve been around, tasting very old whiskey and generally working my butt off. A few long weeks at the office make wine so much more delicious. We’re now deep into fall and Christie’s has a great selection wine from legendary producers in their upcoming sale. These are a bit more expensive than I typically recommend, but for these producers, you have to consider what you would be paying otherwise. Now, to the lots.

Sotheby’s Finest and Rarest Wines – September 25, 2015

I sat down to write this post and my girlfriend, sitting beside me, said, I don’t understand how you can look through so many listings, it looks so boring. A fair point. So let me take some of the legwork out for you and show you where to look.

Hart Davis Hart: An Auction of Finest and Rare Wines (September 18th and 19th) – Day Two

Another quick post late at night after a long day of work. I apologize for any mistakes, but I have already been up for a solid nineteen hours. As I said before, there is a lot of promise here in this auction. I initially had a lot more picks, but based on how day one went, I am adjusting my selections considering how aggressive bidding was. I wish you the best and I have included my lot selections below. Good luck!

Hart Davis Hart: An Auction of Finest and Rare Wines (September 18th and 19th) – Day One

This is my first ever experience with HDH out of Chicago. I’ve never participated in one of their auctions, but I’ve heard good things and wanted to see what they were about. I was pleasantly surprised to see the estimates in the auction and there is promise here. As always, keep your cool and don’t get too fidgety.

Wally’s The September Auction – Hindsight

I always go through the notes I wrote before the auction and compare them to the actual results. Whether or not I actually participated, I like to analyze my thought process and see if I was accurate in my predictions.

Wally’s – The September Auction

This auction is taking place on September 12th at Restaurant DANIEL in New York City. Wally’s is a Los Angeles based company, but they host many of their sales in New York City. They have only been in the auction game for a few years and they’ve had some turnover, but they’re finding their way.

Acker Merrall & Condit – Back to School II: Part 1

This will be my bread and butter. I’m much more familiar with wine than I am with spirits. Here we have an auction from Acker Merrall & Condit on September 10th and 12th. The Thursday event is at night at River Park and the Saturday auction starts at 9:30AM at Marea. If you can make it, it’s always fun to go in person.
